You need a big orchestra to conjure up the celestial bodies that orbit our sun, and in The Planets Gustav Holst uses every available instrument – and a wordless chorus – to convey the vastness of outer space.

A specially augmented TSO captures the grandeur and intensity of this enduringly popular work, composed exactly one hundred years ago. From the juggernaut of “Mars, the Bringer of War”, to the sirens’ call of “Neptune, the Mystic”,The Planets offers memorable tunes, stirring rhythms and vivid orchestral colours.

Another work which looks to the heavens is Ngangkar by Sydney-based composer Georges Lentz. Taking its title from an Aboriginal word for “stars”,Ngangkar pays homage to the “vast empty space of the Australian landscape with its radiantly beautiful night skies”.

The Violin Concerto by Frederick Delius is a little-known gem, but in the hands of distinguished English artist Tasmin Little it receives its most powerful and passionate advocate.
