Drawn from the Book of Genesis, Milton’sParadise Lost and theBook of Psalms, and taking its cue from such famous oratorios as Handel’sMessiah, Haydn’sThe Creation offers a visionary account of the origins of the world according to Old Testament teaching.
One hundred and fifty years ago The Creation was performed as part of the festivities marking the opening of Hobart Town Hall. That concert – on 27 September 1866 – was “attended by so many persons that standing room was not procurable [and] hundreds were turned away,” reported the Mercury. This concert pays tribute to that milestone in Hobart’s history while also acknowledging the enduring appeal of Haydn’s timeless oratorio.
