Simone Young is renowned for her interpretations of the great Viennese masters, and here she brings her attention to Beethoven, the man and the music.

The slow movement of Beethoven’s first Razumovsky quartet provides the musical inspiration for Brett Dean’sTestament, where Dean explores the psychological distress Beethoven expressed in his ‘Heiligenstadt Testament’ of 1802 as his hearing deteriorated.

Almost ten years later Beethoven creates one of his greatest Symphonies, the Seventh. It’s a work of extraordinary energy and vitality; Wagner declared it ‘the apotheosis of the dance’. Its famous second movement is unrelentingly dramatic, and the other movements are propelled by an endless exuberance.
