A rising star on the international piano scene returns to his native Australia for his SSO recital debut with a program including Beethoven’s Waldstein sonata.

Young Australian pianist Jayson Gillham has been based in London for the past nine years, making a name for himself with some prestigious concerto engagements and recital appearances, and impressing juries in the Leeds and Van Cliburn competitions. In 2014 he took out the first prize in the Montreal International Music Competition playing a Beethoven concerto.

For his first SSO recital he’s chosen a program that contrasts the intricate brilliance of the Baroque style with the almost ‘orchestral’ sound of the 19th-century piano. And there are two threads tying it all together: on the one hand the virtuosity of the toccata and the piano etude, on the other the infinitely rich possibilities of variation form.
