Garrick Ohlsson returns to Sydney with a vivid and inspiring solo recital program including Mussorgsky’s piano masterpiece, Pictures at an Exhibition.

Forget the preludes, the fugues, the sonatas, all those the musical abstractions… Pianist Garrick Ohlsson has created a recital program where pictures and storytelling are at the heart of the music. He begins with a virtuoso suite inspired by the artist Francsico Goya and an imagined love affair. The music is full of Spanish colour and glittering effects. The second half of the recital is Mussorgsky’s masterpiece, the wonderfully evocativePictures of an Exhibition in its original piano version. ‘Promenade’ with the pianist as he strolls an exhibition of delicate sketches and imaginative designs before reaching the dramatic finale with the Great Gate of Kiev.
