How we love the music of Russia! Fiery, impassioned, full of power and beauty with a touch of the exotic.

We open with Tchaikovsky’s rarely heardVoyevodaBallad, a work that was almost lost to us as he destroyed the full score after reading a scathing denunciation from a critic on the first performance. Luckily, it was secretly preserved. Acclaimed young cellist Kian Soltani presents his noted interpretation of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1 (widely considered to be one of the most challenging works for cello). And then, music of hope and redemption: Rachmaninov’s hauntingly beautiful second symphony, an all-time favourite.

Conductor Lukasz Borowicz

Cello Kian Soltani (Australian debut)

Program: Tchaikovsky Voyevoda, Symphonic Ballad
Cello Concerto No.1
Symphony No.2
