Concerts by Eighth Blackbird celebrate the joy of the new. The closest thing classical music has to a rock band, this ensemble – described by theLA Times as a collection of ‘supermusicians’ – revels in the work of living composers, played with love, virtuosity and enjoyment.
Composer Nico Muhly wanted to write for Eighth Blackbird ‘the most fun piece possible’;Doublespeak was created for a festival honouring Philip Glass and toys wittily with his familiar rhythmic soundworld, exploring the tradition of American minimalism. Bryce Dessner (from the indie pop band The National) takes a darker look at Americana, weaving folk music and grisly murder ballad traditions into an enthralling contemporary pondering of violence and American identity.
Holly Harrison, from Western Sydney, is a bright new star in the Australian composition sky. Winner of numerous international prizes for her strikingly imaginative works, she has been commissioned by Geoff Stearn and Musica Viva’s Hildegard Project to create new music for this tour.
Ted Hearne’s amazing, intense work By-By Huey was inspired by painter Robert Arneson’s portrait of the man who killed Huey P. Newton (co-founder of the Black Panther Party); when self-destruction is the theme, the music tends to get wild…
Checkered Shade is Timo Andres’ extraordinary response to the finely detailed work of artists Astrid Bowlby and Edward Gorey: he describes it as ‘a gradual zoom outward’ that coalesces to a delicately serene chorale.
