Educational, insightful and entertaining.

In Ears Wide Open, you are taken on a unique musical journey by host and MSO cellist Nicholas Bochner. Nicholas together with the musicians of the MSO will deconstruct famous classical pieces so that you understand the context, history and story behind these well-known works. You will get into the mind of the composer, will hear the musicians perform what is being explained, and you will dive deeply into the pieces.

The second Ears Wide Open of 2020 is the emotional Tannhäuser Overture – a piece of great beauty by German composer, Richard Wagner.

Wagner led an interesting and controversial life. Alongside his reputation for revolutionising opera, Wagner was known for his contentious writings, turbulent love affairs and political exile.

In 1845, Wagner composed the three-part opera titled Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg, which was based on two German legends, the legendary medieval German poet,Tannhäuser, and a thirteenth century singing contest held at Warburg Castle. TheTannhäuser Overture is the famous opening of this opera, which lays out in spectacular fashion the main themes from the work and is often played separately as a concert piece. Known for depicting a tale of seduction, sacred devotion and redemption through love, Tannhäuser is – in the words of Wagner himself – “sensuously exultant”.
