It’s interesting to reflect that, had not Gustav Holst journeyed to Spain in 1913 and got into conversation with a fellow traveller who introduced him to astrology,The Planets might not have been composed. Imagine the result if they had discussed more earthly concerns, such as tapas or bullfighting. ButThe Planets it is, and Holst’s idiosyncratic and spectacular orchestral suite has secured a… well… universal place in the repertoire with its depiction of seven planets in our solar system. This program, with MSO Associate Conductor Benjamin Northey, begins with a buzz: Vaughan Williams’ Overture to The Wasps, written for a production of Aristophanes comedy at Trinity College, Cambridge. Australian pianist Andrea Lam is soloist in Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2 — a work described by Franz Liszt, no less, as ‘of ideal perfection, its expression now radiant with light, now full of tender pathos.’
