SSO is looking for a Head of Learning & Engagement to lead strategy, program design, planning and delivery for the Sydney Symphony’s school and community programs across NSW. The role

SSO is looking for a Head of Learning & Engagement to lead strategy, program design, planning and delivery for the Sydney Symphony’s school and community programs across NSW. You’ll need to be an expert in education, getting the best results from existing programs, and creating new programs to address unmet needs in schools and communities.

What do you need to be successful in the role?

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in music education
  • Professional experience in design of education programs, including an understanding of the NSW State Curriculum
  • Demonstrated teaching experience of primary and/or secondary students
  • Knowledge in music education best practice and innovation across the world
  • Knowledge of historical and contemporary music for orchestra
  • Comprehensive writing and verbal communication skills
  • Financial skills, including skills in developing and delivering on budgets
  • Technical proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Willingness to rapidly develop working skills in critical technology platforms, including Tessitura and OPAS
  • Determination and practicality to guarantee successful delivery all programs
  • Interpersonal skills in collaborating with staff members and musicians across the entire Sydney Symphony Orchestra

Key responsibilities

  • Develop strategy for overall portfolio of Learning & Engagement programs, setting specific educational or social objectives for each program (in agreement with Director of External Affairs, and in line with the Sydney Symphony’s Strategic Plan)
  • Design content for each program, matching musical repertoire, presenter content and activity plans with program objectives
  • Oversee planning for each program, establishing excellent relationships with venues, partners, presenters & musicians
  • Deliver programs, taking responsibility for the success of every Learning & Engagement event
  • Report to philanthropists and funding bodies, assessing the impact of Sydney Symphony Learning & Engagement programs
  • Set budget for overall portfolio of Learning & Engagement programs (in agreement with Director of Finance)
  • Represent the orchestra to significant education institutions in NSW, including Regional Conservatoriums Network, Board of Studies, ACARA and NSW Institute of Teaching
  • Provide expert advice to the administration on policy and contemporary trends at State and Federal levels
  • Carry out other reasonable duties as required

  • The role is permanent and full-time

· The role reports to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Director of External Affairs

· Appointment to the role is subject to you passing a Working With Children Check and police check

  • Remuneration will be by negotiation, dependent on experience
