Sydney Theatre Company’s collaboration with the Australian Defence Force,The Long Way Home, recently completed its national tour. After premiering in Sydney in February, the production flew to Darwin, Brisbane, Wollongong, Townsville, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth over the last two months.
The tour took in locations with significant Army bases and the response of both seasoned theatregoers and the larger Defence Force community was clear, with the majority of venues recording sold out seasons.
With wounded, injured and ill soldiers as key cast members,The Long Way Home told the real-life stories of these returned service men and women and their families as they struggle to deal with the consequences of war.
For both Sydney Theatre Company and the Australian Defence Force the production broke new ground and introduced new audiences to both the power of theatre and the experience of combat.
