In a first for students at the Sydney Conservatorium, 13 young musicians in the Opera Australia/Sydney Conservatorium Internship Program travelled to Vietnam in early April to perform Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohéme as part of the Hennessy Music Series.

The tertiary music students, who all major in performance, have undergone intensive preparation and mentoring from Opera Australia staff to take part in the production, which featured Opera Australia singers at the beautiful French colonial Hanoi Opera House.

They played from a specially prepared reduction of Puccini’s wonderful score.

It all came about when Opera Australia resident director, Matthew Barclay, approached Gérard Patacca, General Manager, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra (AOBO), to provide an orchestra for the Hanoi production.

The performance was a valuable addition to the internship program which provides intensive Masterclasses with members of the AOBO; observation of rehearsals and performances in Opera and Ballet Seasons; mock auditions; and touring and tutorials focusing mainly on Opera Australia’s current and upcoming seasons.
