Orchestra Victoria marks its milestone 50th birthday with a gala at the National Gallery of Victoria

To mark its milestone 50th anniversary this year, Orchestra Victoria will host a grand gala on Thursday 15 August in the Great Hall of the National Gallery of Victoria. The event will showcase a retrospective musical program that looks back on half a century of work and music that has inspired dancers, singers and audiences of Victoria and beyond.

Conducted by Orchestra Victoria’s Artistic Director Nicolette Fraillon AM and Maestro Johannes Fritzsch, the gala’s program will highlight a repertoire that illustrates the journey of the company’s 50 years and include works from some of the world’s most lauded and admired composers, including Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Wagner.

Drawing together some of the nation’s most loved arts companies, the gala will feature guest performances by Principal Artists from The Australian Ballet and, Helpmann and Green Room award-winning, singers Lorina Gore and Jaqueline Dark. The Australian Ballet will perform the iconic ‘Rose Adage’ from The Sleeping Beauty and ‘Act II Pas de deux’ from Swan Lake featuring music from two of Tchaikovsky’s most renowned scores; plus, Lorina and Jaqueline will perform arias from Bellini’s I Puritani, Tchaikovsky’s Jeanna d’Arc and the famous duet from Hänsel und Gretel, Abendsegen and Dream Pantomime.

Orchestra Victoria is one of Australia’s two specialist pit orchestras and for 50 years has partnered with the nation’s finest ballet and opera companies, including The Australian Ballet, Opera Australia and Victorian Opera.

Artistic Director of Opera Australia Lyndon Terracini wishes the company well in its 50 years, saying: “Opera Australia congratulates Orchestra Victoria on its 50th birthday and we look forward to many more years of making wonderful music together”.

The orchestra has also played an invaluable role for regional Victoria impacting many thousands of lives through education programmes and live performances across the state. In celebrating 50 years, we will be joyously celebrating five decades of dedication, commitment and incredible artistry by, and with, some of Australia’s most talented artists.”

To continue the celebrations, Orchestra Victoria will host a gala in Bendigo on Friday 16 August.
