Malthouse’s production ofI Am a Miracle took home five awards.In the ‘theatre companies’ categories, it won Best Production, Best Writing for the Australian Stage (Declan Greene), Best Female Actor (Melita Jurisic), Best Set and Costume Design (Marg Horwell and Paul Jackson) and Best Sound Design and Composition (David Chilsholm and Marco Cher-Gibard).
Malthouse also won Best Lighting Design (Katie Sfetkidis) for Meme Girls.
Several Opera Australia productions were honoured, with the company winning seven awards: three forLe nozze di Figaro—BestProduction, Best Design (Jenny Tiarmani) and Best Lighting (David Finn); two forDon Carlos—Best Female Lead (Milijana Nikolic) and Best Male Lead (Giacomo Prestia); one each forMadama Butterfly—Best Conductor (Guillaume Tourniaire); andThe Rabbits—Best Female in a Supporting Role (Jessica Hitchcock).
Melbourne Theatre Company took home the theatre category’s Best Ensemble (with Kay + McLean Productions) forNorth by Northwest, and Best Direction (Leticia Cáceras) forBirdland.
Sydney companies also featured with Sydney Dance Company scoring three awards: Best Duet and Ensemble Performance (QuintettandFrame of Mind), Best Female Dancer (Jesse Scales inQuintett) and Best Male Dancer (David Mack inQuintett andFrame of Mind); andBelvoir co-winning Best Contemporary Performance Text withOedipus Schmoedipus (with post and Arts House).
Patricia Cornelius’s SHIT was the big winner in the ‘independent theatre’ categories with awards for Best Production, Best Writing (Cornelius), Best Set and Costume (Marg Horwell) and Best Ensemble.
The Green Room Awards were established in 1982, and since then have been Melbourne's premier performing arts industry awards.
