This week the nominations for the 2013 Helpmann Awards were announced, with the Australian major performing arts companies achieving almost half the available nominations.

Of the 166 nominations across 41 categories, 75 were from (or associated with) a major performing arts company.

'Given some of the categories are outside the remit of the majors - such as Best International Contemporary Concert or Best Contemporary Music Festival - this is a fantastic result', Ms Bethwyn Serow, AMPAG's Executive Director, said today.

'Their presence in the Awards not only confirms their strength in traditional categories such as the opera (where the majors gained all but two of the possible nominations), it also highlighted their achievements in more general categories.

'For example, in Best New Australian Work, the majors gained three of the possible six nominations, as well as all the Best Play nominations and most of those for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.'

The Helpmann Awards Nominating Panels include representatives of the live performance industry, including the Live Performance Australia Executive Council and previous Helpmann Award winners, as well as other prominent industry practitioners. Panelists include artists, creatives, arts administrators, writers, journalists, producers, promoters, venue managers and educators.

This year, the awards were announced simultaneously at events in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth. This is the first time the nominations events were held concurrently in six cities and a first for Adelaide, Hobart and Perth.
