August Sneak Peeks 2016

West Australia’s Black Swan State Theatre Company, celebrating its 25th anniversary, opens The Caucasian Chalk Circle, its first international collaboration with the renowned Chinese director Dr Wang Xiaoying and the National Theatre of China. Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre presents Edward II, giving the 14th century king a modern day facelift, while Melbourne Theatre Company presents Kate Mulvaney’s adaptation of the Australian coming of age classic, Jasper Jones, and later in August, the Pulitzer Prize winning drama Disgraced.

Bangarra heads to Queensland with the company’s much-acclaimedOUR land people stories and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra takes a musical tour across the globe withAround the World & Back. Premiering at the Queensland Theatre Company,St Mary’s in Exile is the true story of the Catholic Church’s ousting of a much-loved Brisbane priest in the face of his religious defiance.

Staying with theatre, two very different productions are premiering this month. Sydney Theatre Company presents the crime thrillerThe Hanging by Patrick White Playwrights’ Fellow, Angela Betzien, and the State Theatre Company of South Australia hits the stage running with four actors playing 139 roles in the comedyThe 39 Steps.

To our south, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra presents Violin got Soul featuring Latvian violinist Baiba Skride and across Bass Strait, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presentsTognetti and The Lark Ascending featuring violin legend Richard Tognetti.

With spring around the corner, this month’s performances will get you through the last of winter.
