The evening will comprise:
Marianelli Voyager Violin Concerto _ World Premiere, QSO commission
Presentation by Professor Brian Cox on travelling through the cosmos in the Voyager Space Rocket with video footage of the journey to accompany the music. Brian Cox's fascinating lecture will be followed by the three movements of theVoyager Violin Concerto, performed by Jack Liebeck and the QSO, conducted by Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch.
Holst The Planets Suite
Presentation by Professor Brian Cox about the planets in our solar system with video footage, followed by a performance of Gustav Holst'sThe Planets Suiteby the QSO conducted by Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch with accompanying video footage of the planets depicted in the music.
This symphony is one of the most spectacular works in all symphonic literature (voted at the top of the ABC's Classic 100 20th century masterpieces and celebrated as the theme of the Rugby World Cup).
The Planets Suite is a seven movement orchestral work where each movement is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst:
- Mars the Bringer of War
- Venus the Bringer of Peace
- Mercury the Winged Messenger
- Jupiter the Bringer of Jollity
- Saturn the Bringer of Old Age
- Uranus the Magician
- Neptune the Mystic, with a wordless, female choir from The Australian Voices
