International opera awards shortlisted

The shortlist for the 2016 International Opera Awards has been announced, selected by the jury chaired by John Allison, editor of Opera magazine and classical music critic with The Daily Telegraph (UK).

Also on the jury were opera specialists and musicologists from around the world, including Lyndon Terracini, Artistic Director of Opera Australia, as well as music critics from the UK, the US and Europe.

Among the many shortlisted artists, recordings and companies, two locals were nominated: Brett Dean’sBliss, performed by Opera Australia and released by ABC Classics, for Best CD of a complete opera; andThe Rabbits, a co-production between Barking Gecko/Opera Australia/Perth and Melbourne Festivals, written by Kate Miller-Heidke, nominated for best World Premiere.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 15 May which will be held in London. To vote in the Readers' Award go to the International Opera Awards website:http://www.operaawards.org

Brett Dean has also recently won the Australia Council'sDon Banks Music Award, whichhonours a distinguished artist aged over 50 who has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to music in Australia. It is named after Don Banks, an Australian composer, performer and the first Chair of the Music Board.
