Excitement builds under — and outside — the big top

Roll up! Roll Up! It’s all happening under — and outside — the big top as Circus Oz builds capacity, engages communities, develops artists and promotes access for regional Australians, as well as enabling First Nation’s artists’ development in circus.

All this and the Model Citizens tour too!

Model Citizens is the first show for Circus Oz from their Artistic Director, Rob Tannion. Following a three-month tour through Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, Model Citizens will be the annual Melbourne winter highlight when it has its Circus Oz Big Top premiere in Birrarung Marr, supported by the City of Melbourne.Tannion will create a specially crafted premiere season ofModel Citizens on a larger scale filling the generous dimensions of the tent and expanding the ensemble with four new artists.

Crisscrossing the east coast of Australia for the next three months, Circus Oz will also play their part as a hub for community growth and development. Free Circus Workshops will be conducted in all of Circus Oz’s regional venues (except Dandenong, Brisbane and Penrith) throughout the tour, approximately two weeks prior to the performances.

From its inception, Circus Oz has had and continues to have a very strong focus on community engagement and activation across its many forms. In partnership with VicHealth, Arts Centre Melbourne and All the Queens Men as part of Fun Run, Circus Oz recently worked with regional schools to develop skills and present a short display, as part of the ‘entertainment’ and flash mob dancing scheduled during the marathon.

In another exciting initiative, as part of City of Melbourne’s First Nations’ Yirramboi festival, the Circus Oz BLAKflip Program presents ‘Chasing Smoke’, directed by Natano Fa’anana.
