The West Australian Symphony Orchestra’sSymphony in the City is a highlight of Perth’s summer calendar, finishing as usual with the traditional 1812 Overture and fireworks display. Another Christmas favourite,The Nutcracker, gets the festive treatment from the Queensland Ballet and The Australian Ballet presents the sparkling mischief ofCoppélia in a ballet for all the family.
With guest conductor Simone Young, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performs the last orchestral works by Mahler and Bruckner including a portion ofParsifal featuring acclaimed Wagnerian singers. And Belvoir presents the gawky rite-of-passage story, Girl Asleep, a play about being lost in the jungle of ‘teenagerdom’ and coming out the other side.
Opera Australia brings 2016 to a spectacular end with two simultaneous grand events to see in the New Year – Puccini’sLa Bohème and the annual Opera Gala.
And behind the scenes the artists and creators are also dreaming big. We take a brief look at some of the brand new Australian works planned for 2017 - an exciting taster of things to come.
