Queensland trifecta aims for the stars

Three Queensland performing arts companies have now announced events in 2013 and 2014, funded by the Queensland Government’s new Super Star Fund which is used to bring international artists to Queensland and cultivate local talent.

A galaxy of international stars will perform inspirational music with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in a world premiere event in Brisbane in November 2014.

Headed by everyone’s favourite physicist Professor Brian Cox, OBE, Journey Through the Cosmos includes two performances in the QPAC Concert Hall; an education performance for students; illustrated lectures by feted UK musicologist, biographer, lecturer, and radio presenter Stephen Johnson; three music and lecture events with Professor Brian Cox, Dario Marianelli, Professor Brian Foster and Jack Liebeck, and live streaming of one concert.

As well as a performance of Holst’s The Planets Suite, the event presents the world premiere of the Voyager violin concerto by Oscar-winning film composer Dario Marianelli, performed by virtuoso violinist, Jack Liebeck with the QSO and Maestro Johannes Fritzsch.

Marianelli is renowned for composing the soundtracks for The Brothers Grimm (2005), Pride & Prejudice (2005), Atonement (2007) and Anna Karenina (2012), receiving Oscar nominations for the last three. In 2008 he won both an Oscar and Golden Globe for the score of Atonement.

Queensland Ballet was the first performing arts company in Queensland to benefit from the state government's Super Star Fund. In June and July this year, Tamara Rojo, Carlos Acosta and Steven McRae, all principals with The Royal Ballet in the UK, were brought out to perform with Queensland Ballet in Sir Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo & Juliet.

And earlier this month the Queensland Theatre Company announced an exclusive production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by internationally-acclaimed Shakespearean director Michael Attenborough CBE, as the latest recipient of Super Star funding from the Queensland Government.

The contemporary production, scheduled for 2014, will be in collaboration with theatre group Grin & Tonic Theatre Troupe.
