And the winner is Yarrabah the Musical

At last night’s Australian Event Awards, Opera Australia won Best Community Event with Yarrabah The Musical.

The company’s artistic director, Lyndon Terracini, had long held a desire to work with the Indigenous community from Yarrabah, an hour south of Cairns, to create a musical allowing the community to tell its story. Indigenous theatre director Rhoda Roberts was commissioned to listen to the stories and write the script.

The production was held in the community park on August 28 and 29. It included professional musicians led by Shenzo Gregorio, supporting an enthusiastic cast of local singers and dancers of all ages, performing with the high profile star, Casey Donovan.

At the event, Yarrabah’s mayor said, ‘I reckon this opera business is another form of corroboree. It’s a way to tell our stories, to help each other, and if it gets everyone sitting around the same fire then it’s a great thing.’
