AMPAG Companies win 23 Helpmann Awards

Live Performance Australia presented their 10th annual Helpmann Awards at the Sydney Opera House on Monday 6 September 2010.

AMPAG companies dominated the opera, dance, play, concert and technical award categories taking out a colossal 23 awards out of a possible 35 eligible categories.

The Melbourne Theatre Company production of Richard III was the most awarded production of the night, taking out Best Male Actor, Best Supporting Male Actor, Best Supporting Female Actor, Best Direction and Best Play, with the MTC (and AMPAG’s) Board Chair Derek Young accepting the trophy for Best Play.

Peter Grimes (Opera Australia and Western Australian Opera) was the big winner for opera winning best opera, best direction, best male performer, and best male actor in supporting role. Opera Australia continued the winning streak with more wins awarded to La Sonnambula, Cosi fan tutte and  their new Australian opera, Bliss.

Sydney Symphony  took home the gongs for best symphony orchestra concert and chamber and instrumental concerts.

The Artistic Director of Bangarra Dance Theatre, Stephen Page, took out best choreographer and secured the best ballet or dance work for Fire. Bangarra also won the award for best regional touring production. Danielle Rowe from The Australian Ballet and Richard Cilli from Sydney Dance Company took home the top dancing awards, with both of them vehemently thanking their parents for the years of lessons.
