Recognising arts educators

Recognising arts educators

To mark World Teachers’ Day on Thursday 5 October, Queensland Ballet and World Alliance for Arts Education released a joint statement recognising arts educators.

World Alliance for Arts Education advocates for arts education worldwide. The organisation was formed in 2006 with the coming together of the International Drama/Theatre and Education Association (IDEA), International Society of Education through Art (InSEA), International Society for Music Education (ISME) and World Dance Alliance (WDA).

World Teachers' Day was inaugurated on 5 October 1994 by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to recognise the role of teachers in society.

The joint statement reads as follows:

Curious minds add value to any situation

Curiosity, the desire to take risks and to experiment are all central to the creative process of the Arts.

Dedicated teachers can sustain these behaviours in themselves and in their students by nurturing and promoting creativity as a principle for lifelong learning.

Learning through trial and error and remaining adaptable are skills that will sustain all of us; generations; entire communities and indeed our world.

Arts classrooms, Arts learning and role models of the Arts can foster in young minds a capacity to test, reflect, evaluate and solve abstract and complex issues; to think critically and to reposition their ideas and themselves and to share this learning with confidence.

As our world changes, students who know how to collaborate, empathise and imagine will thrive in societies that are driven by innovation and a belief in the unimagined.

It is this unimagined future that should be driving creativity in business, in our communities and indeed in our schools and training organisations.

Let’s celebrate our Arts educators who foster this future-focussed thinking and entrepreneurial approach.

On World Teachers’ Day we congratulate all the Arts educators who are engaging with their students and communities and reflecting on their own way of operating through a lens of creativity. We must sustain this practice so we and ourworld remain adaptable, curious, and colourful.
