The 2018 Composition Project is underway at WASO as they welcome their composers who will work alongside Artistic Director James Ledger to each create a brand new work for a 14-piece chamber orchestra made up of WASO Principal and Associate Principal musicians. The composers works will be premiered in WASO’s Education Week+ in June 2018.
One of their most enduring and successful Young & Emerging Artists programs, the Composition Project provides emerging composers with the opportunity to develop their skills in a professional orchestral environment.
Participants Brock Stannard-Brown and Luis Tasso Santos (UWA Conservatorium of Music), Corey Murphy and Callum O’Reilly (WAAPA) will write a new work for a 14-piece WASO chamber ensemble. Participants are mentored over a four month period through a series of individual lessons, workshops and rehearsals, prior to being premiered in front of a live audience. This project has helped previous participants successfully gain placement in national and international composition programs, post-graduate studies and secure professional commissions and residencies.
Cassandra Lake (Executive Manager, Community Engagement) further comments on the program “We are delighted to continue to offer this opportunity to University students studying composition, as an extension to their studies. WASO are committed to providing professional experiences for students as a way to bridge the gap to professional career. This program is a highlight in our calendar.”
