The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra have announced the successful participants selected for the 2019 Australian Conducting Academy Summer School, which will be held in early 2019.

TSO announces participants for 2019 Australian Conducting Academy Summer School

Open to Australian and New Zealand permanent residents, The Australian Conducting Academy plays a vital role in nourishing talented emerging conductors, and supports graduates in building substantial careers both in Australia and internationally.

8 participants were chosen from a field of 49 applications and include 3 returning participants, Sam Weller (Sydney), Leonard Weiss (Canberra) and Riley O’Doherty (Hobart).

Participants come from a range of backgrounds and experiences including students currently enrolled in post-graduate study and professional orchestral musicians.

The 6 men and 2 women will attend the second ACA Summer School 24 January –1 February, 2019 and be tutored by Course Director and TSO Principal Guest Conductor Johannes Fritzsch. Conductors will work with guest violin soloist Harry Ward, a student at the Australian National Academy of music (ANAM)

The course will include five rehearsal calls with the orchestra over the course of the school, culminating in a final performance with the TSO on Friday 1 February at 5pm in the Federation Concert Hall, which will be open to the general public.

The participants are: Nicholas Bochner (Melbourne), Benjamin Crocker (Sydney), Vivian Horn  (Melbourne), Riley O’Doherty (Hobart), Stefanie Smith (Brisbane), Leonard Weiss (Canberra), Sam Weller (Sydney), Scott Wilson (UK)

Observers have been invited to apply and six will now be selected to attend.

The course, with support from UTAS, will take place at the TSO and UTAS Conservatorium of Music Thursday 24 January –Friday 1 February, 2019.
