State Theatre Company South Australia’s co-production with UK theatre company Frantic Assembly of Things I Know To Be True completed its highly successful UK tour in Chichester on 26 November.
After 72 performances given to 31,000 people across the UK, and 30 performances given to 12,000 people in Adelaide and Canberra, this international co-production of Andrew Bovell’s new play has been a huge success for State Theatre Company and Frantic Assembly, ‘melding an Australian sensibility of storytelling with the styling of contemporary British theatre’ as put by The Guardian Australia.
The London Standard gave the show five stars and said, ‘Scott Graham and Geordie Brookman share directing duties and have crafted something appealingly tender. The staging is fluent — inventive without being grandiose, and at times genuinely beautiful. Gorgeous music by Nils Frahm underscores the mix of warm humanity and sadness.’
Co-directed by State Theatre Company Artistic Director Geordie Brookman and Frantic Assembly’s Artistic Director Scott Graham, the production had its world premiere in Adelaide before transferring to London for a season at the Lyric Hammersmith with a UK cast, followed by a regional five city UK tour in which virtually all performances have sold out and elicited standing ovations.
Geordie Brookman said “The barnstorming success of ‘Things I Know To Be True’ in Australia and the UK has been the stuff that dreams are made of. It’s put our State Theatre Company firmly on the world stage and comprehensively proven that our long term approach to the development of new work and belief in innovative theatre making is the path to future growth.”
