The Suitcase Series wraps up Regional tour

In 2020 Malthouse hopes to pack its Suitcase for a bit of a longer trip,
working with Drama South Australia and other S.A. partners to roll the
programme out in that state – with a view to sharing the success of this
remarkable programme even more widely.

The Suitcase is Malthouse’s Theatre’s award winning education programme for students in Years 9 and 10. Each year Malthouse Theatre provides a specially commissioned script and supporting resources to participating schools, who are invited to prepare a 20 minute performance piece in response.

Some schools present a straightforward excerpt from the playscript, others come from deep left field with something wild and brand new. After sharing their work with each other at a special in-theatre day, the students then watch Malthouse Theatre’s own, professional production of the work.

Since it began in 2010, Malthouse has especially commissioned 5 new plays from writers including Declan Greene, Angus Cerini and Maryanne Lynch and more than seven thousand students have gone through the programme. “Suitcase” is unique in giving young theatre makers access and agency on an Australian mainstage and schools travel all over Victoria and interstate to participate.
