Meet the brand new batch of bright and curious minds who are joining the SSO Young Ambassadors program in 2018.
Now in its second year, the Young Ambassadors program is for young people who want to get involved with their orchestra. The Young Ambassadors will attend concerts, interview artists and audiences, and tell us all about their experiences, all in the name of sharing their passion for live orchestral music with the SSO Community – and beyond.
Young Ambassadors is a learning program for people aged 6 to 21 who are determined to share and explore their curiosity for live orchestral music.
In 2017 this program was piloted with their first six SSO Young Ambassadors. The Young Ambassadors create an active and continuing dialogue about orchestral music, its development, production and performance across the SSO community of musicians, patrons, concertgoers, academics and educators. Activities include concert attendance, interviewing artists and audience members, escorting groups to concerts and writing about music.
I want to be a SSO Young Ambassador because I believe with great passion that classical and orchestral music can be enjoyed, shared and experienced by all, and it should. Through the SSO's outreach programs including schools concerts and regional tours to NSW, classical music is brought to people who would not normally see an orchestra.

I love the beach and all things music (classical rules pop drools). I have played the flute since year 5 and the piano since kindergarten and am now taking up the piccolo. I wanted to be an SSO Young Ambassador so I can share the feeling of classical music to the wider youth audience – the joy and absolute happiness that bubbles off the notes into your ears.
A majority of people that I know are indifferent to orchestral music. I would like to change their perception. I also would like to find ways to make live orchestral music available to people, especially children, who cannot experience it because of financial hardship or geographical isolation. I want to share my love of and the beauty of orchestral music with others.
I have been learning flute for 11 years. Growing up in a rural area, I haven’t been able to immerse myself in as many orchestral activities as I would’ve liked. Being an SSO Young Ambassador will allow me to answer my own curiosities as well as those of other musically-inclined kids in rural areas.
My name is Hamish and I am 6.5 years old. I have been learning the cello for one year and I play in my school string ensemble called Stringbeans. I love going to concerts, especially at the Sydney Opera House. I love hearing the orchestra when they play loud. It would be fantastic to meet the players. If I met the conductor I would ask them to conduct faster. I would like to meet other people who like music like me.
I absolutely love the orchestra. The 2018 season is packed – conductors and soloists are coming from every corner of the globe, at least five works are having their Australian premieres...not to mention the Family Concerts! Young people can't afford to miss out, and so I'm really excited to be a Young Ambassador this year.
