MSO announces 2019 Cybec Young Composer in Residence

A recent graduate of the University of Western Australia’s Conservatorium of Music, Mark studied composition with James Ledger and Christopher Tonkin.

Over the 12-month residency, Mark will work alongside MSO musicians and administrative staff to gain hands-on experience with venue acoustics, scoring and program development. He will create two new orchestral compositions to be work-shopped and performed by the MSO in 2019.

Welcoming Mark to the MSO's artistic family, Managing Director, Sophie Galaise described theCybec Young Composer in Residence program as an important stepping stone for emerging Australian composers.

'The MSO is committed to identifying and supporting the next generation of Australian composers,' she said.

‘We believe it is our responsibility to underpin the future of the art of orchestral composition and we thank Roger Riordan and theCybec Foundation for allowing us to offer this opportunity to promising young composers like Mark.

'We look forward to hearing the results of Mark's residency with us as part of our 2019 program,' said Ms Galaise.

Mark Holdsworth described the MSO as a ‘formidable orchestra’, and said he is ‘truly honoured’ to receive the appointment.

'Notes are only potential sounds until realised in performance. Because of this, performance is a very special experience that a composer shares with musicians and it requires great courage and trust from both sides. I feel incredibly privileged that the MSO has put that trust in me,' he said.

Mark is the second young composer to be invited to join the MSO’s artistic family as theCybec Young Composer in Residence. His appointment follows Ade Vincent, the 2018 recipient of the residency. Ade Vincent's compositionHood Yourself in Stars will receive its world premiere on Thursday 19 April 2018 as part of the MSO’s Metropolis New Music Festival.
