Opera Australia enables children all across Australia to take the first steps on their own special journeys with opera, through our Regional Children’s Chorus and Regional Student Scholarship programs.
One of Australia's greatest theatrical minds, John Bell, directs this English-language production,Madame Butterfly, complete with beautiful costumes and sets and participation of the Regional Children's chorus.
The 2018 Regional Children’s Chorus program gives 20 children aged between 9 and 14 years in each community visited on their regional tour the chance to perform as the Chorus inMadama Butterfly.
The program offers hundreds of youngsters the chance to rehearse and perform with the world’s third-busiest opera company. The children are chosen by local choir leaders in each tour location, and learn the music from Madame Butterfly before donning costumes and joining the OA artists on stage as part of the performance.
The 10-week National Tour begins in Albury, NSW visiting regional and metropolitan locations across four states – Victoria, New South Wales, ACT and Tasmania – giving 33 performances in 27 towns, including Wyong, Horsham and Yarram, which have never before featured on the tour circuit.
Running hand in hand with the Children’s Chorus program are the Regional Student Scholarship auditions, which give ten talented high school students from each community the opportunity to take an individual audition with the Opera Australia Regional Children's Chorus Master, in the hopes that they will be one of four successful recipients of the 2018 Scholarship prize.
Opera Australia’s touring productions are designed to captivate audiences of all ages, sung in English using modern translations. This production of Madama Butterfly has also been selected for the 2018 VCE Theatre Studies Playlist (Unit 4).
