The classic tale of Billy Goats Gruff meets the popular music of Carmen in an opera/fairy-tale mash-up for school children – El Kid.
In this co-production between Opera Australia and the Arts Centre Melbourne, the party animals of Seville are off to the fiesta, but weird little Diego is left behind — no oddballs allowed. However, in a classic showdown of brains versus brawn, El Kid proves that fortune favours the bold and even the smallest of things can blossom into something fabulous.
Designed to introduce young audiences to opera, this 50 minute family opera explores the courage you find when you believe in yourself by re-imagining the much-loved story of theThree Billy Goats Gruff and setting it to the melodies of Bizet's Carmen.
Every year, Opera Australia performs to around 80,000 primary school children throughout Victoria and NSW. This new production of El Kid was developed especially for Victorian school students, and included a range of curriculum-based teacher resources to help classes explore classical music using a familiar fairy-tale.
