A research and development project between UK 's Diverse City/Cirque Bijou and Circus Oz bringing artists together to explore ways to deepen Circus access and diversity.
Circus Oz's rehearsal space has been buzzing in the weeks before Christmas with the arrival ofExtraordinary Bodies, an exciting international collaboration with the UK partnership ofDiverse City/Cirque Bijou on the “Extraordinary Bodies” project. Their core tenet is ‘circus for every body, on and off stage and in the audience. For artists with disability there are often many physical and social barriers to individual and collective expression, and this project aimed to remove them, devising new material and new methodologies.
Together the groups have created a training environment where performers of all abilities could be in control of their own space, and went on a journey to integrate audio description, signing and new ways of communication into the art form, not just between the performer and the audience but between the performers themselves.
For some it's extremely out of their comfort zone, for others it's all in their stride, but for all this circus collaboration has been thrilling and the learnings immense.
Looking forward to the future of circus!
