Since the federal and state commitment to new funding arrangements in 2000, the AMPAG companies have produced a vibrant, innovative slate of productions, with 46 new Australian works a further 17 new productions, remounts or arrangements of existing Australian works and 76 Australian premieres of works originating from outside Australia in 2015, with a further 187 Australian creative developments

Major Performing Arts Audiences

  • In 2015, 4.1 million people attended a performance, school activity or workshop by the MPAs—an increase of 270,000 on 2014. these, 2.6 million were paid attendance generating $193 million in single and subscription sales.
  • The MPAs also provide free outdoor performances individually and within major city festivals, as well as special artist talks, behind the scenes events, free ticket performance days for the unwaged and free live remote telecasts of mainstage performances
  • Close to 566,000 school children and teachers attended education activities for schools, of which more than 160,000 were from regional and remote Australia. Education and workshop attendances increased on 2014 figures in both regional and metropolitan areas.
  • Just over 99,000 people attended MPA workshops in regional and metropolitan areas- in 2015.

Regional and Remote Audiences

  • The MPAs tour across Australia to regional and remote communities in all states and territories.
  • In 2015, there were 301,000 attendances at MPA activities in regional and remote areas.
  • There were 160,200 attendances at schools activities, 7,800 attendances at workshops, and 133,000 attendances at performances.

New Audiences

  • MPAs’ initiatives to build access for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and programs for older people have both more than doubled since 2010.
  • Programs directed towards people living with a disability have more than trebled in that time.
  • Initiatives targeting other segments of our population including children, youth and early career artists have also grown steadily as have regional initiatives.
  • In 2015 the MPAs estimated that 13 million people watched or listened to a broadcast or screening of a MPA company performance, up from 10 million 2014.
  • In 2015 the MPAs had 1.2 million friends/followers on social media and their digital platforms received 7.5 million unique visits.
  • The MPAs have developed additional digital content for cinema screenings, live digital simulcasts around regional Australia and are offering program and behind-the-scenes interview downloads on the internet.

The MPAs are using digital media in new and innovative ways—for example:

  • Adelaide Symphony Orchestra developed a virtual reality series – an orchestral world first.

    Queensland Symphony Orchestra connected with more than 1.6 million people through live streaming.

  • Sydney Symphony Orchestra presented a New Year’s Eve concert that was also projected on the sails of Sydney Opera House.
  • The 2016 World Ballet Day, with The Australian Ballet, the West Australian Ballet and Queensland Ballet, broke the record for the longest Facebook Live stream to date, reaching over 315,000 people and an additional 272,000 people watching on Ballet TV.
  • The Divorce—a collaboration between ABC TV Arts, Opera Australia and Princess Pictures­ – was broadcast over four nights on ABC-TV in December 2015 reaching 1.1 million viewers is a multi-platform project that reinvented opera for television, film and online audiences all across the country.
  • The 28 companies receive wide critical acclaim both nationally and internationally. They are well recognised in the arts industry as evidenced by the peer awards they receive each year such as Helpmann Awards, Green Room Awards, Critics Circle and the Deadlys. Find out more at Awards.
