The Matilda Awards honouring and celebrating the achievements of the Queensland theatre industry have been announced at the Brisbane Powerhouse.
Playlab were the big winners at this year's awards, awarded the Gold Matilda Award for evolving into Queensland’s new-writing theatre company with their inaugural production ofBlue Bones, positioning them nationally as the only company to take work from idea through development, on stage and into publication.Blue Bonesearned the mainstage Silver Matilda Award, the Lord mayor's Award for best New Australian Work . Ian Lawson won Best Director, David Walters won Best Lighting Design and Nathan Sibthorpe, for their work on this production.
Playlab also published Michele Lee’s political play Rice (delivered through Queensland Theatre in 2016)which took out the Prize for Drama at the 2018 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards last month.
Queensland Theatre were awarded Best Male Actor in a Leading Role toColin Smith,for his performance inAn Octoroon (Queensland Theatre & Brisbane Festival) – and Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role toAnthony Standish,An Octoroon.
